Established in 1991, The Joint Replacement Institute (JRI) is recognized worldwide as a leader in joint reconstruction. The focus of the JRI is the surgical treatment of end-stage arthritis of the large joints: the hip, the knee and the shoulder. The mission of the JRI and St. Vincent Medical Center in Los Angeles is 1) to provide state-of-the-art patient care, 2) advance joint replacement surgery through cutting-edge clinical and basic science research, and 3) educate the community. JRI physicians have operated on thousands of patients, trained numerous other surgeons, been widely published in scientific journals, and lectured worldwide. The JRI is internationally recognized for contributions in research and education in joint arthroplasty.
JRI specialty procedures include partial and total knee resurfacing, hip resurfacing, total hip replacement, shoulder and elbow replacement, as well as knee and shoulder arthroscopy.
About JRI Doctors
Harlan Amstutz, MD, Board Certified Orthopaedic Surgeon, performed the first total hip replacement in the United States in 1967. His career has included service as Chair of Orthopaedics at the UCLA Medical School and terms as president of numerous peer societies. An American, British and Canadian (ABC) Fellow, Dr. Amstutz holds the Seddon Society Medal, the John Charnley Medal and the UCLA Alumni Association’s Professional Achievement Award. Dr. Amstutz was recently honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the American Orthopaedic Association (AOA). His decades of research have resulted in a device that leaves more of the bone in place, avoiding removal of the femoral head.
H. Michael Mynatt, MD, Board Certified Orthopaedic Surgeon, is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) and the Western Orthopaedic Association (WOA). Dr. Mynatt has served as a principal investigator for various studies of hip and knee arthroplasty, including the Ceramic-on-Metal IDE study that began in 2007. Dr. Mynatt also led the Arthritis Institute at a major medical center. He has taught orthopaedic surgery as an associate professor at the University of Southern California School of Medicine and in training programs at various hospitals throughout Southern California. He was twice named Teacher of the Year for the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at USC.
Thomas P. Schmalzried, MD, Board Certified Orthopaedic Surgeon, is Medical Director for the Joint Replacement Institute. Dr. Schmalzried specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the adult hip and knee, with a focus on total joint replacement. A pioneering researcher in joint arthroplasty, Dr. Schmalzried was a research fellow in joint replacement, sponsored by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). He is a three-time winner of the John Charnley Medal for orthopaedic research, has authored more than 100 scientific manuscripts, and is the Joint Replacement Section Editor for Orthopedics Today. Dr. Schmalzried has served on the Board of Directors of the Western Orthopaedic Association, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the Orthopaedic Research Society, and the Association of Arthritic Hip and Knee Surgeons.
