Nationally recognized autism advocate, “Dr. Phil” regular on-air legal and special needs expert, Harvard law honor graduate and managing partner and president of Martin & Martin, LLP, one of the largest African American-female owned law firms in Los Angeles, Areva Martin specializes in employment, education, disability and general business litigation. Also the mother of an autistic son, Areva authored The Everyday Advocate: Standing Up for Your Child with Autism (NAL, an imprint of Penguin) that provides tools, practical advice, and step-by-step instructions for learning advocacy skills that helps parents and others assert themselves and get results for their child. The book also provides readers with 7 advocacy strategies, resources, advocacy principle exercises, check lists, legal advice and more, along with the telling of heartwarming inspirational stories. Areva is the president and co-founder of the Special Needs Network (SNN), a non-profit launched to support lower income and minority families with special needs children.
Areva is also the only African American woman on the Legislative Blue Ribbon Commission on Autism. Among Areva’s many honors and awards, a few recent notable accolades include Cookie magazine’s prestigious 2008 “Smart Cookie Award,” L’Oreal’s 2008 “Women of Worth” award, Cerebral Palsy International Research 2008 “Power Heroes” award, and the 2007 Women of the Year Award by the Los Angeles County Commission on Women for her work on behalf of women and children.
